New and improved!

Hey all, I have been m.i.a and I apologize. I didnt blog for a few days and my wife was telling me, "you need to get back to it". I told myself, "if people were actually reading these someone would have asked me where I have been". Well, someone in my class kept me accountable and asked where my blogs have been. Here it is and I tweaked some things to make it more user friendly.
This blog now allows comments from anyone(was only for blog members), and the name of the blog lets people know it is a blog. I was told by a few people they didnt know what it was I was posting on my facebook because it didnt specify, so now its "Jacob's Blog".

Update: Since my last post, Nisa is now feeling better from her flu-like symptoms, and my immune system was able to fight it off. I have taken my first Biochem/metabolism exam and I got a good amount of workouts in in the last week to prepare me for Saturday. Whats Saturday, you ask.
Tomorrow I leave with a friend Gene to Ontario, Ca for a "crossfit" competition. I mentioned it before in a previous blog, well the day has arrived. I qualified as #12 in my class and I will be competing against the 13th rank athlete. The competition is a 1 on 1 crossfit style workout battle where only the winner moves on. Here is the link for those curious  http://www.battlefitwest.com/ .

To keep the same format here is my days schedule:
6:30-7:30am:               wake-up and get ready for school
7:30-11:30am:              lecture in class
12-1pm:                        short workout with Kojo(classmate)
2-4pm:                          eat and take a nap
4-6pm:                          study
6-7pm                           eat and relax
7-10pm:                        study
10-11pm                       book hotel in Cali for the comp and then blog

I will take some pictures at the competition and post them as soon as I can.

I want to incorporate something new into this blog. " I will remind you for a few blogs to try and encourage participation".Post a question in the comment section below and I will answer/address that question/topic
       on the NEXT blog.
(I will address/answer more than 1 question so don't "not post/comment" just because someone already did)

example questions: (health, personal,religious,educational,humor)
-Jacob, what should I eat if I want to lose belly fat?
-What sports did you play in High school?
-Where are you from?
-What are your study habits?
-Why do you have so many spelling/grammer errors(lol)

For All My Dog Lovers

Well my last blog was a hit. Almost 100 views in less than 24 hrs. People love to hear a great story and Im glad I had one to share. Turn the news on today and all we get is the negative, destructive, and sad things going on in the world. Dont lose sight of the good people. There are still hungry people being fed, countries that were in war that are no longer, people who are deciding not to commit acts of crime. The good still out weighs the bad, we just dont get a clear perspective of this since the media gets higher ratings with the bad, therefore, showing "the bad".

I want to talk a little bit about our dogs before I get into my days schedule. Most of the time if not all of the time I leave dog duty out of my schedule. Let me start with introducing them.

Vick: I got him as a 6 week old puppy from a friend. I have now had him for about 4 years. He is a pit/lab and yes he is named after Vick the football player(got him around that incident).
The pic is him as a puppy(had to create the "awww factor"

Sligh: Nisa found him on Sligh ave. in Tampa on a rainy day headed to work. she tried earnestly to find his owners but to her satisfaction had no luck. He is a chubby pomeranian.

Chico: Nisa got her border collie Chico when he was about 8 weeks old about 7 years ago.

Honey: honey is a maltese that suffers from seizures. we have to give her medicine 2/day. She is Slighs girlfriend.

Well now you have met our 4 kids. I will continue to leave them out of the schedule to keep it short and simple. They are lots of work, from feeding to medicine, from barking to roadtrips they have given us our fair share of hard work. Having a doggy door has been a blessing but a curse as well. They would use the doggy door late at night and bark loud enough to wake angry neighbors. They good side is we dont have to take them out during the day since they can help themselves.

    Schedule:
9:30-11:30:        class(went in late)
11:30-1:00:        short gym time w/ Kojo ( hang cleans, incline bench and ab work)
1:30- 2:30:         Nap
3:00-4:30:          back physical therapy
5:30-7:00:          Strength class at my local Crossfit gym
7:30-9:30:          study and take a quiz
10:00-11:00       blog and get some rest

Tomorrow morning I am having breakfast with my high school basketball coach who is in town for a 3 day work trip. He wants to meet at 6:30am so he can make his flight at 8:30am. If I plan on staying awake in class I better get to bed. Have a blessed night family and friends.

Before and after, a real one

Let me just cut to the chase....
     schedule:
3:00-6:30am:       study for final
7:30-9:00am:       get to school and take the Neuro Anat. final
10:00-11:30am:   class lecture for the new class
12:00-2:00pm:     study: activity worksheet and a quiz
4:00-5:00pm:       Nap
5:30-7:00pm:       crossfit strength class
7:00-8:00pm        Yoga
8:30-9:30pm        Nisa made some dinner* and we enjoyed
9:30-                    Blog

As you can see from above I started a new class today. This class is a three week long biochemistry/metabolism class. I've taken this subject before so my hope is I retained some of it, at least a fraction of it. Our schedule for this class is 7:30-11:30 am so although I will tread waking up it will allow me to have lots of afternoon and evening time. I'm not sure yet how my study, nap, and workout schedule will be yet but I'm sure I will adapt just fine.
I checked the count today and the blog is at about 1,600 views since day 1. I cant see who views my blog though, just the number of views. I wish I could see who is reading my blog so I can cater it to a certain age/interest group. for now Ill just keep the same format though.
I spoke with a good friend of mine in Tampa today, Jon. Met this kid when I was 5 in our kindergarten class and its evident by his calls even though Im in another state he is a true friend. I knew when I moved out here contact with my close knit group of friends would dwindle a little but man I don't even know if some of them are alive. If you think your one of the individuals Im describing send me a text, would love to know how life is strangers(this doesn't include Devin, and Miami). Oh, I forgot to mention Jon went from 290's(lb) and is now in the 190's. For anyone that thinks they cant make a change, he crushes that doubt. If you want to know how he did it just comment/message me. What I had him do can be accomplished by anyone.

 PROUD of you Jon

Hope you have a great week,
              Jake

* Chuck roast, white rice, and corn. With a strawberry protein shake to help my body rebuild.

Long day

For those that read last nights blog, you know I played basketball at 6am this morning. My day started out with a light breakfast at 5:30 am then I played ball from 6-730am. For anyone who has tried to play a sport that early, you know it takes about 30 minutes for your body to cooperate with what your brain is telling it to do. I survived though and had a good time.
Today was the last day of my neuroanatomy class and the final exam will be Monday morning at 7:30 am. This class was very insightful. I have learned lots about diseases and disorders caused by neurological damage from Parkinsons to cross eyedness. I can walk away not just with a letter grade but with knowledge.
I managed to fit a good workout in today around lunch time but my body was fatigued from the morning bball session. Kojo and I did some leg work, chest work, and finished with a brutal core workout.               I managed to get a 15 min high intensity workout out of the way in the evening as well but that was only possible since I napped for two hours after class. My body is taking a beating but it will pay off as it rebuilds.
For anyone interested in diet/workout regiments or just needs some motivation feel free to inbox me or comment on the blog. I would be more than happy to assist.
I will move on to my schedule now so I can go to bed. Early morning yoga tomorrow requires sleep or I might just pass out.

          Schedule:
6-730am:             Bball
7:30-9am:            relax, eat and get ready for class
9-1130am:           Class lecture
1130-1230:          workout w/ Kojo
1-3pm:                 class: case studies and exam review
3-6pm:                 much needed Nap
6-7pm                  hang out with Nisa and do my 15 minute workout*
7-10pm:               dinner w/ Nisa, watched T.v and relaxed
10-11pm:             blog and bed

-as you can see I didnt study any today. I will save that for tomorrow,Sunday, and Monday morning before the exam.

      Have a good weekend,
                Jake

This Isn't easy

Most of you know my goal is to write a blog everyday. Well, it's getting harder and harder but I will continue to do my best. This morning's exam had a lot of content to learn and I spent most of last night/this morning trying to do so, so I skipped out on blogging. Anyways, I digress, USF lost tonight!!! Anybody watch? My alma mater had a game on ESPN tonight and lost to Rutgers again. I must say watching portions of the game made me miss going to the games and cheering for my friends and of course my brother-in-law.
Nisa still isn't better but we went to the DR today to see what the deal is. Looks like some antibiotics should fix her. I am doing my best to not get it. Lots of O.J, water, and my regular multi-vitamen, oh and lots of hope. So far it has worked.
         Schedule:
3am-8am:        study
8am-9am:       exam
10-11:30:        class lecture
11:30-1pm:     eat and nap
1-3:30:            class lecture
3:30- 5pm       worked out(back and biceps)
7pm-8pm   :    Dr. appt for Nisa
8-9pm:            new sushi place
9-10:               trying to get Rx for Nisa
10-11pm:        type up this blog and go to sleep

I plan on waking up at 6am tomorrow morning and meeting a group of students for an hour of basketball games before our 9am class. So while the world sleep Ill be bettering myself. "Wake up, look up, get up, and dont give up" I heard that in a speech once and it came to my mind just now. sorry I cant give credit to the person( I dont know who it was).

I wish all a very happy Friday. Be productive. Don't waste your time reading status updates all day, don't wish you were doing what somebody else is doing, just go better yourself.

     Signing off,
         Jacob

PS. Happy Birthday to my Mother-in-law, I Love you!!!

IM BACK

I took the weekend off from blogging but Im back to start the week off. My weekend consisted of hot yoga and running some errands Saturday morning and church, lunch and studying Sunday. I had to study for this mornings Exam not just Sunday evening but also this morning(see my schedule).
Nisa managed to catch the cold that is running rampant at her job so I had to turn my immune system up a notch. I hope she gets better soon and I managed to fight it off. I tried to talk her into calling off from work but she is a trooper and says she wants to save her days off so we can go see our Tampa family during the holidays.
I wanted to share my landlords situation so you can keep her and her husband in your thoughts and prayers. Her husband is a 6'2" former policeman, I say this to emphasize that this can happen to anyone. He has had numerour brain issues(assuming from strokes) that have led to seizures on a regular bases and much much more. To name a few things she is dealing with.... He doesnt recognizer her sometimes, cant control his bladder, faints regular, and is always going back and forth to the hospital for injuries due to falls and for surgeries. This is a lot on a lady who stands 5'0" and lives alone with him. She started crying sharing this with me and she is a strong woman so to see her in tears means this is a big burden on her. Her husband shows signs of recover everynow and then and that is the "hope" that keeps them fighting. Needless to say my back tightness didnt bother me very much that day.
On a lighter note My Grandmother is recovering well from her hip surgery and is anxious to start swimming again when the Doc gives her the go ahead. My Dad and my Uncle got a new apartment together so they are excited to have more room and a bigger kitchen.

          Monday schedule:
6:00-9:00 am:           Study for exam
10:00-10:30 am:       exam
10:30-12:30pm:        worked out at the YMCA(did legs today) and then played some Bball
1:00-5:00 pm:           class: lectures
6:00-7:00 pm:           strength class Im enrolled in at the crossfit gym( lots of weighted lunges)
7:00-8:00 pm:           Hot yoga
8:30-9:30pm:            dinner and chill with Nisa
9:30- bedtime:           write this blog, watch some T.V and sleep

side note:On my second blog I posted my weight and body fat %. I did it again today and I gained 1lb but lost about .5% of body fat. So officialy at 202lb and 11.0%.

    see you tomorrow,
              Jacob

TGIF

TGIF is usually said after a tough week but this week wasnt all that bad for me. Looking back at it this week went by fast Oh and for that exam I took thursday, got an A. I have to thank the big upstairs as always. I know it was a four day week but those four days were a flash. Now to plan the weekend. Not sure what Im going to do yet other than study, and chill with Nisa which doesn't seem to be that bad.
I just got home for a sushi place called Sakana and nearly had to be rolled out. I had edamame, two full roles(philly roll, shrimp tempura roll), and half of another(tootsie roll). Since I only had half I now have a good midnight snack. Before sushi Nisa and I went through about 50minutes of hell at the gym. We did a workout that was killer. It was...
50ft of overhead walking lunges(115lb men, 75 lady)
 10 burpee box jumps
 15 thrusters (115,75)
 20 tire flips
 25 push press(115,75)
 30 parallette shoot through
 35 kettlebell swings (70lb men, 44lb lady)
 40 situps
45 SDHP (70, 44)- sumo deadlift high pulls
 50 Double under jump rope
 200 m run w/ ball( 20lb men, 14lb lady)
--we each had to do the above stuff and let me tell you!! It hurt!!

Other than that workout, today was a great day. Hope my Tampa friends and family as well as my new Arizona friends had a great day as well. Sorry for tonight's late blog by the way. I forget that I'm three hours behind Tampa time. Sometimes I get messages asking why I haven't posted my blog yet and its only 9pm my time. So for those waiting.... just check it out in the morning if you can.
FUN FACT: Arizona does not follow daylight savings. I wont be changing my clock at all living here

           Today's schedule:
10am:            woke up to dogs barking at thunder(yea it rained out here believe it or not)

10:00- bedtime: blog, and watch TV till my eyes clothes

My hope is to wake up early for some Hot Yoga but that's if I wake up to my alarm, you will have to wait till tomorrow to see if I made it

       Have a great weekend,
                Jacob

1,000+ views

Well today marks my eighth blog and the stats say this site has recieved 1,037 views!!! Yea I said 1,037. I had no Idea anyone would actually read these and now Im having people tell me left and right, "great blog", "I'm following you", "keep it up", and of course, "give me a shout out".(here you go Amir and Alex). So for all of those I entertain, thank you.

Today's exam went well. I dont yet have the grade but I dont expect I did poorly. With that being said I will assume the other tests will have the same difficulty level which means more "free time" and more interesting stuff to read about on my blog.

My motivation lately for working out is a competition on 9/29/12 in Ontario, Ca. The competition is a one-on-one crossfit battle with single ellimination set-up(you lose, you go home). I had to quailify to get in by completing 3 workouts and having a result/score in the top 36 athletes in my class. So wish me luck and I will keep you updated on the progress.

Today there was another haboob(sandstorm) here in Mesa, Az. for anyone who hasnt experienced one, they are neat to see in the distance but when your in one they are no fun. from what I hear from the locals they never really occured in the past and just in this summer alone there has been about 7 I can recall.

      Todays schedule:
4am-7am:         study for exam
7am-7:50:         EAT, had some cocoa crispies and watermelon(dont judge me)
8am-830am:     Exam (neuroanatomy)
830-10am:        go home and eat another breakfast and watch some sportscenter
10am-noon:      lecture in class
noon-1pm:        eat lunch at school
1-3pm:              lecture
3-4:30pm:         workout* with Kojo and Nick(classmates)
4:30-5pm:         walk to my car and drive home in a sand storm(ill post a picture below)
5-7pm:              eat, shower, and chill thill nisa got home
7-8pm:              crossfit workout* with Nisa
8-10pm:            dinner, laundry, shower, write blog. not neccesarily in that order
10-bedtime:      Probably some T.V watching. I havent decided yet

Looking back at my schedule is fun to do. I encourage you to write out what you accomplish in a day and decide if time was well spent or not.

*gym workout:       chest, shoulders, and abs
  crossfit workout:  5rounds of 14 alt. lunges with 75lbs, 100m sled pull(100lb), 14 box jumps(24in)

      Enjoy your Friday ,

Untitled

Nothing spectacular happened today. I ended up going to bed last night at 2:00am so I decided to sleep in till 10am which worked out nice since my class was only from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Today in class we did two case studies(busy work) and had a short review for our first neuroanatomy exam tomorrow. It wasn't  too demanding on my brain so I decided I would go home and study for tomorrow's exam. Nisa came home with a migraine so I hope she feels better, I know the pain. For those that don't know I suffered chronic migraines from about 4yrs old till I hit my early teens. I am so thankful I grew out of that, sometimes remembering those days help me to appreciate these days.

      - to the fun part:
10am:                  woke up and had 4 eggs and some watermelon
10:30-12:00:       gym time (back, biceps and triceps)
1pm:-3pm:          class for case study and review
     3pm-7pm             study for tomorrows exam
7pm-8pm             eat and write this blog
8pm-bedtime:      no clue what I'm going to do, maybe watch some
t.v maybe look at my notes some more, probably some
stretching because my legs  are killing me from yesterdays leg workout.

I bought an album yesterday on iTunes by an artist named Lecrae. The album is called Gravity for anyone interested. I am listening to it right now and love it. His lyrics are awesome in a day when everything on the radio is dumb and played out. Am I the only one that cant stand Nicki Minaj?? Anyways check Lecrae out or Trip lee, it will be a nice change from the crap the radio feeds us 24/7. Attached is a good one

love 3 day weekends

Well its over. My mini vacation was everything I wanted it to be. Tried a few new restaurants, watched 2 movies at the house (21 jump street, hunger games), and hung out with some classmates at a barbecue.
Back to reality again though. Today I had my first day of neuroanatomy which is a two week course.
Oh and for those that were praying for a good result on my final exam....thanks again.....drum role please     Got an A! So I'm now 4 classes in to dental school with straight A's. I read a bible verse today that talked about hard work, here it is below if you want to read it. If not then skip it and continue below it to my days awesome schedule:

If you truly belong to the Lord, Peter wrote, your hard work will prove it. If you're not working to develop the qualities listed in 2 Peter 1:5-7, maybe you don't belong to him.
2 Peter 1:10So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away.

8:30-9:30am: worked out Legs with Kojo.
10-12 :           lecture
12:00- 1pm:   lunch and ran an errand
1-5pm:           lecture(man was it hard to stay awake)

Good day

Today was a good day. Today reminded me of how I spent this last summer. Basically doing stuff I "wanted" to do all day. I realize now that last summer was probably the last summer "break" I will ever have. When we are in school we take being "off" for granted. The real world however doesn't give you months off at a time does it?
Well it was another HOT day here in Mesa, Az. If I remember correctly the LED sign outside of a local bank read 112 degrees when I drove by. I miss my Florida weather sometimes....and then I read all of my Tampa friend's statuses about how much it rains and think nahhhh I like it when my parade isn't rained on.

Sat:
7:30-845:   Hot yoga
8:45-9:30  did a crossfit WOD*
930-1pm.   cool down, eat, and nap till Nisa got home from her Overtime at her new job
2pm:          lunch with Nisa at SouperSalad( like sweet tomatoes)
3pm           shop till we dropped( soccer cleats, soccer ball, socks, protein from
                  GNC, 2 watches for Nisa)
6pm            soccer at the park with the Wife! "she isn't all that bad"
8-10pm       shop for some juicy steaks and make dinner together.

This to me is a Great day, the kind society says we are supposed to work our whole life for, so we can retire and do this every day. But too many people are hungry, tired, and sick. So we must balance this "enjoyment" with "LOVE" and give. Give time, energy, assistance, and whatever else others in less fortunate circumstances need. remember to make a difference friends.

* 21 kettle bell swings, 4 rounds of: 15 ring rows, 9 pullups, 5 pushups, 400m run.

Ill continue Tuesday when classes start back up
       Enjoy your weekend,
           Jacob

3 day weekend

I survived! I haven't collapsed from my lack of sleep yet, just keep running on fumes. My hope was to nap after my exams today but that didn't happen. Right after my 2nd exam today I went to a new place called YCs. Anybody tried it? Its a Mongolian grill, pretty good. Then I had to go get Nisa's car.
On the way to Arizona we went through a mean hail storm near Pensacola Fl. that dented her hood and roof bad. We finally got it fixed and it happen to be complete during my planned nap time!!! From there, went to the mall and eventually ended up at the Native New Yorker. Never heard of the Native new Yorker? neither had I. Its a sports bar/grill and man do they have some good wings.

I didn't plan anything special for this 3 day weekend so...lots of "nothing" will do just fine. Well my tank is on E so time to get some rest for tomorrows Yoya, weightlifting, and chill time. Be safe out there.

PS. For those wondering how I did on my final exam: scores aren't posted yet but pray I passed please.

    God Bless,
       Jake

Game time

I had a transformation today from a scruffy, long haired, caveman look-a-like to a clean cut man that can contribute to society....I went to the barbershop. For those that don't know I was a professional barber since I graduated high school and kept that trade up for about 7 years. I had great clients become friends and great friends become clients. Sitting in line at a barbershop is weird when you have been on the other side of the line before.

Today is the day before our cumulative H&N anatomy final so I entitled todays blog "game time" as a way to show how I mentally prepare for this stuff(exams, sports). If you don't do things to your best ability, why do them?
I planned my day around knowing that I will be studying all night. What do I mean by this? Just like training or preparing for a game or a competition you have to train and prepare to show knowledge of a topic and in my case, tomorrow, lots of topics.
My goal is to study from 10pm till the10am before my 11am exam. WHOA!!! although 12 hours may seem a bit extreme..... Its only 12 hours of the week and adding that with the amount of studying I did all week(very little) it puts me in a good position to do well. I have always been one to cram lots of material in a short period of time and retain it for a short period of time, knowing this I play to my strengths(learn everything right before the exam). 56% of my class grade comes from my performance tomorrow so again this is why I have to have a "Game Time" frame of mind.

schedule today running in to tomorrow:
 8-930am:     class
 10-11am      haircut
 12-1 pm      eat and chill
1-2 pm        school for a short presentation on TMJ
2-3 pm        sprint progressions at a field near my house with hills
3:30-730     sleep to make up for the lack of sleep I will get tonight
730-10pm   eat, chill, and write this blog before the game begins!!
10pm-9am   revisit and understand thoroughly everything we have learned in the last 3 weeks
  11am-1pm  final exam
  230pm :      lab practical final
  4pm-          sleep!!!

As the great Dr. Cottam (my current professor) said, "successful people do things unsuccessful people don't want to do, they don't want to do it either , but they want to succeed"

Wish me luck on my exam tomorrow. Ill let you know how I did.

DAY 2: so far so good

8/29/12
I did it. I managed to successful complete two consecutive days of blogging. My wife told me she is surprised I am doing this and to be honest me too. I will continue until it doesn't help anyone anymore. My current professor Dr. Cottam said a quote before class the other day that I don't remember exactly but it was along the lines of  " success is leaving the world knowing someone was able to breathe easier because of my life". My goal in doing this is to help someone in someway or another.

Anyways onto the good stuff. Today I had a Dr. appt. to go over my MRI results of my lower back. Long story short I have a bulging disc and I should just keep working out to keep my core strong. I decided to take what he (Doc) said serious and workout even harder today.

-school time:
So for those that don't know, at ASDOH(Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health) the curriculum is set up as a "modular system", meaning we take one class at a time and it is condensed.
So for example:
week 1= embryology; class all day some studying after and a final on Friday
week 2= histology; same professor as embryology so same class schedule
week 3= musculoskeletal system: new professor new schedule and new info
week 4-present (3 week course) : new professor, exams on Monday's and a final this coming Friday.

today:
9-10am:            Dr. appt.(class was from 8-10am today but I got an excused day off for my appt.)
10am-2pm:       studied for our Head & neck final exam( this Fri.)
2:00-3:00         reviewed last 2 exams that the professor allows us to examine
3:30-4:45         worked out chest, and abs really good with a classmate Kojo.
6-7pm              Hot yoga at my crossfit gym
830-10pm :      basketball tournament against the 3rd yr dental students( my team won)
10-1030:          lovely wife made me a late night dinner since I'm a growing boy
11-1am:           make this blog and study some of the stuff that will be on the final.

I was really active today and it makes these last few hours of the night hard to focus on school work but everybody is different and this is working for me so, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

See you tomorrow,

1st Blog

So I know when I was in my undergraduate my program one of my burning questions was what is it going to be like when I am in dental school. Will I have a life? Can I still play sports and workout? Will I succeed?
Now that I am here and living, playing sports, and attempting to succeed I thought I would share how I am doing it.

Quick bio:
I am 23 and in my first year of Dental school at ASDOH in Mesa, Az. I spent my undergraduate years in my hometown of Tampa Fl. I am into many sports(basketball, football, soccer and anything team related) and fitness(weight training, crossfit). I recently married an awesome woman I met in church by the name of Nisa. I like cars, movies, and food.

My goal is to post my daily school routine, workout routine and some of my leisurely activities so hopeful dental students, current dental students and busy people can see what life is like for another individual.

If you have questions or want to know specifics about something just let me know.

week 3 of Head & neck anatomy:
      Tuesday 8/28/12

8-10am : class lecture on the orbit(eye hole)
11-12:30: Gym workout (arms biceps, triceps, shoulders)
      1-2pm: Lab presentations
      3-5: Nap
      5-8 study
8-9pm: dinner and relax with the wife
      9-10 ( 2nd gym session) abs, forearms
10- midnight( study and make this blog)

Signing off,
